The greatest barrier to God’s Grace is not sin but rather “vice cloaked in virtue.” Dane Ortlund borrowed upon Augustine, calling these the unrepentant repentant.
Therefore, the Gospel of Grace in Christ’s blessing is for those who know they don’t deserve it.
In the blessing for the “poor in spirit,” we plead for what we need: not by what we bring but rather in the pleading of Christ— grace for what the undeserving need. With open hand and outstretched arms, Christ commands the blessing. Come join us and let us sit around His table of blessing together in Matthew’s Gospel for what we need.
